For a few decades dhiraagu was the only telecom company in the maldives ...
however ... in February 2005 wataniya telecom was issued a licence as a new mobile phone operator ...
the competition between the two company has brought down prices in several services ...
and that had made then expensive services like internet access and long distance calls more affordable to the general public of the maldives ...
